Shoegaze Fridays

Slowdive - Souvlaki Space Station

The Jesus And Mary Chain - Sometimes Always

The Cure - All Cats are Grey

Top 3 Fridays are FUNKTASTIC!!

Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band- "Express Yourself"

The first R&B band to sign with Warner Brothers Records with their debut album coming out in 1967.

This next video is so sick. Watch some of the dancers. At one point there's a shot of a guy in a sailor outfit doing what looks to be the earliest recording of anyone doing the robot. I think this guy may have invented it ten years before it's time. Amazing. Also amazing are the outfits and afros. Enjoy.
B.T. Express - "Do It ('Til Your Satisfied)"

To wrap things up this fine Friday, here's a great Earth Wind & Fire song for your listening pleasure. I dare you to sit still... impossible... feel the funk, y'all.

Earth Wind And Fire "Shining Star"

TED LEO & THE PHARMACISTS FRIDAY JAMS X 3

I really only know this album, "The Tyranny of Distance" but it's enough to say that I love Ted Leo.
I don't really care to hear his other stuff, this album is just fine.
He always plays the Seaport (or something like that) in the summer, but I've never gone. I like the mystery.

My favorite song on the album:
BIOMUSICOLOGY

My second favorite song on the album:
PARALLEL OR TOGETHER?

And to round it out, here are two songs he covered:
SINCE U BEEN GONE / MAPS (KELLY CLARKSON / YEAH YEAH YEAHS COVERS)

Third World- 96 Degrees in The Shade

Summer Lovin'

Danadition and I got creative with the iMovie and decided that it'd be a good idea to sing you all a duet.

YACHT - Psychic City

okay this song has been in my head for weeks.

THE DAY'S ALMOST OVER DANCE PARTY BREAK!!! YACHT - SUMMER SONG

You have to admit, it makes you feel good...

I want her dance moves.

Johnny Cash - "A Boy Named Sue"

We all know the story of how a young man was named Sue by his estranged father and subsequently got the shit kicked out of him for it. Well, what you might not know is that Johhny Cash didn't write it. It was written by a cartoonist/poet/singer/songwriter named Shel Silverstein who was inspired by his friend, Jean Shepherd, who had a girly name.

Some say that Cash was pestered into performing this song at the prison in San Quentin by his wife. The video below is that original recording. He had never performed it before and didn't even know the words yet.

Martika - Toy Soldiers

FREDDIE KING - Ain't No Sunshine

Around the middle of this clip, Freddie King throws his head back.
So feeling that move. I might steal it.

Cass McCombs (Featuring Karen Black) - Dreams Come True Girl

a sweet, sweet lullaby.
Cass McCombs - Dreams Come True Girl

Built To Spill - Distopian Dream Girl

Toots & The Maytals- 54-46 That's my Number

Frederick "Toots" Hibbert, the frontman of the group, was arrested and imprisoned for 18 months in late 1966. He stated that he was not arrested for ganja, but whilst bailing a friend. He wrote this song about his time in jail.

Tears for Fears - Sowing the Seeds of Love

Modest Mouse - What People Are Made Of

A comment on Youtube describes this song as "a huge ball of energy aimed right at your fucking skull." I agree. Great song, great album, great band.

What's up? Make love.

The Notwist - Consequence

The Who - "Bald Headed Woman"

By far my favorite Who song, "Bald Headed Woman" wasn't even written by the band. Shel Talmy was the mastermind behind this song (along with "My Generation") but it was actually released by The Kinks a year earlier on their first album and covered by a bunch of other bands of the era. Harry Belafonte also recorded a version. I've been trying to find it but no such luck. Anyways, who do you think did it better?

THE WHO

THE KINKS

JFA - Charlie Brown

Inspired by The Prospector's post yesterday - here is some 80's skate punk music.

Jodie Foster's Army, from Phoenix, took their name from a reference to John Hinckley, Jr.'s, attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan

Pale Saints – Fine Friend

The Stone Roses - Bye Bye Badman

My friend J sent this video to me yesterday, saying it made him think of me for some reason, which is really nice. Especially because it's such a pretty song. I hadn't spoken to him in months, maybe a year...since the last time we ran into each other on the street, saying only a quick hello and goodbye.
A lifetime friend that I never see (13, going on 14 years now), but will always be so happy to know.

The Stone Roses - Bye Bye Badman

Salt N Pepa - Shoop

couldn't resist. ;-)

David Lyme - Bambina

... Bam Bam bina, ohoh ohoooh ...

10cc-Dreadlock Holiday

This is one of my favorite 10cc songs. I think a few weeks ago I posted their "I'm Not in Love" song which shows the bands versatility. I think most people hear this song and are surprised to know they are a bunch of white brits.

Bangles - Eternal Flame

HAPPY BIRTHDAY E-PAK!!!

I heard it through the Facebook grapevine that today is our lovely contributor EPAK's birthday...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, EDDIE! Looking forward to seeing you in the flesh soon. Been too long.

Two for Tuesdays: Dory Previn

2-Fer-Tuesday! Smoking Popes - from Destination Failure

Time for a throw-back! Destination Failure was one of the best albums of the 90's. I had a really hard time deciding which songs from this album to put on here. This post changed four times with different songs but I think in the end I made the right choices. At the end of the day they're all fantastic so I couldn't really go wrong.
Enjoy!

Tuesday Twofer - The Winter Pageant

They are no longer a band, but I somehow stumbled upon The Winter Pageant during
the days of Friendster. Can't remember exactly how, but I think the singer was a friend
of a friend or something...Anyhow, I fell in love with a few of the songs I'd heard
(read: OBSESSED), and even went to a couple of shows alone, as most of my friends
hate seeing live music unless the band members are really, devastatingly cute.
And I guess these guys didn't quite make the cut. Disclaimer: I'm not as judgmental
(ok, maybe sometimes)...
Anyhow, I always thought these songs would make good soundtrack music to some kind
of Sofia Coppola film like Lost in Translation or something.
Really atmospheric and a bit intense.

The Winter Pageant - Identical

STEREOLAB - The Noise of Carpet

Dawn Penn's earliest recordings were for Prince Buster around 1966, however by 1970, Penn had left the music industry and moved to the Virgin Islands. Nevertheless, in 1987 she returned to Jamaica and music. This recording is from 2002 at the Blazing Fire Tour in NYC. This track has since been covered and sampled by the artists Kano, Hexstatic, Jae Millz, Ghostface Killah,Mims, Eve featuring Stephen Marley and Rihanna.

Black Uhuru are a Jamaican reggae group formed in 1972, initially as Uhuru (Swahili for 'freedom'). The group has undergone several line-up changes over the years, and had their most successful period in the 1980s, with their album Anthem winning the first ever Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 1985.

The Tiny - "Closer"

Great band from Sweden. The singer's voice is one of those that you either love or hate. I happen to love it. Very unique and very awesome. Great video. Great song. Enjoy!

Romeo Void- Myself to Myself

The Make Up - I am if

Bestest.
(posting this makes me feel ancient).

Q And Not U - A Line In The Sand

Great video from their final show at Fort Reno, which is a great DC venue that is owned and operated by Ian Mackaye's mom.

Fanfarlo - The Walls Are Coming Down

I really dig this album. This isn't may fav. song on the album but I like it, and it has a video on YouTube!

Bauhaus - Crowds

Pastor just beat me to posting a Bauhaus song, but I was literally just about to hit the publish button when his came through.

Love this song, kind of good for a moody, rainy day. I have yet to really understand what the lyrics mean...but I've had some great moments with it...singing along loudly in a car (in los angeles), over and over with an old friend while people at the stoplights thought we were mad....
fun, fun, fun.

oh, speaking of- if you haven't seen it, today is the last day for the bauhaus exhibit at the moma.
it's pretty good.

bauhaus - crowds

Bauhaus - Bela Lugosi's Dead

Bob Marley

This is my favorite Bob song.

Millenium - I just want to be your friend

The Lot Six - "Autobrats"

The Lot Six is the best rock band that you've never heard of. They're from Boston and were my favorite band for a long time. Check out youtube videos of their live performances. You can see me in the one that is of their last show - played at the Middle East Downstairs in Cambridge. I'm the handsome one front row center.
I didn't put that video on here, though... the sound quality of this is much better. Enjoy!

Port O'Brien - I Woke Up Today

I can't remember how, but I heard of Port O'Brien while I was living in Los Angeles in 2007.
Though there is a newer version of this song out (you can hear it and see the horrendous "official video" on YouTube), I really prefer the earlier one- it may have been a demo or something...it's all foggy...but it's kind of nice to wake up to (makes me happy), and is definitely going on my long-ass-run-mix for today...

Port O'Brien - I Woke Up Today

Soko - I'll kill her

Golden Smog - Radio King

Kate Moss and Bobbie Gillespie (of Primal Scream) - Diamond Blues

I cannot believe I forgot about this song! Was so obsessed with it and the video when it came out on showstudio many, many years ago. It's simple, beautiful, and makes me want to run around barefoot in the country and throw tea parties in the summer...

The Static Age - "Vertigo"

The Static Age is a band that took its name from the epic Misfits album. Sadly, they're not a band anymore but they were awesome when they were around.

Elton Motello:"Jet Boy Jet Girl"

Friday, January 22, 2010

Black Lips - Bad Kids

Retribution Gospel Choir - "Hide It Away"

This song sounds a lot better if you don't watch the video. Something about those red chops I think. So he's not the most handsome man in the universe... no big deal.

If Not for You X 3 (YES, IT'S FRIDAY!!!)

I have to admit, this is not an original post. My friends over at Gargyle posted these on their blog yesterday, and I was smitten. I'd been thinking about posting the George Harrison version on a few different occasions, but then something else would come to me...I love a good cover song, and I'd never heard the other versions before...So thank you Nhung and Don!

A little Phoenix sounds in there.

Nina Simone - Aint Got No ... I've Got Life

Bestest Optimism Ever
from the bestest singer ever.

(Surely posted previously on the BSE, and if so, enjoy the repeat.)

Matt Pond PA - "People Have A Way"

I'm not sure if this was already posted. I searched for it on the blog and nothing came up so I hope it's not a repeat. My favorite new song is called "Starting"... I can't find a video for it but I recommend giving it a listen... I think it's better than this one. You be the judge.

Matt Costa - Never Looking Back

Ian Dury - Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick

Ummmmmm.....

Electric Six - "Danger! High Voltage"

This song was a favorite of mine in '03 when it came out. The video is so entertaining. On top of that, it's rumored that Jack White (before he was famous) is the back-up vocalist. It was denied by White and by the band for a long time, but recently the lead singer has said that it was actually him. Whatever, it sure as hell sounds like him.

You'll be a fan of this video. It makes me want to get kinky. Uhh... just kidding... kinda

Sigur Rós - "Inní mér syngur vitleysyngur"

Sigur Rós has been my 'go-to' band for all things relaxing for many years now. Their latest album is called Med ud i eyrum vid spilum endalaust, which, according to Walter Reilly is aboriginal for, 'The Crocodile Who Walks Like A Man'.

The 2008 masterpiece is more uplifting, in my humble opinion, than their four previous records. If you don't have this record, you should get it. Below is an example of a song that I think would be great to hear if you were tripping on mushrooms in a spaceship passing Saturn's rings. Enjoy.

The Hold Steady "Stuck Between Stations"

The Hold Steady is a great Brooklyn band... As for myself, being from the great Garden State of New Jersey, I still think that The Boss did it better, but that was a long time ago... these guys are fun. Just some good old rock n' roll.

Seabear - I Sing I Swim

I love these moving street video performances. The music starts at about :40.

Sondre Lerche - Phantom Punch

Sufjan Stevens "The perpetual self", or "What would Saul Alinsky do"

I am totally psyched on Sufjan Stevens these days. I 'Shazam-ed' this song while watching previews at the movie theatre with my favorite human, Dana.
The album - The Avalanche: Outtakes and Extas from the Illinois Album, was recorded on an analog 8-track recorder. Awesome.
