Surfer Blood and Marnie Stern
I guess this is a new song Surfer Blood performed live with Marnie Stern.
Not really the song of the day or anything, but I am still so bummed I missed Surfer Blood last month so I felt an urge to post a song of theirs that we haven't had on here. Speaking of bummers, I'm also bummed I missed The XX in Philly this past week.

This band comes over to us from across the pond. This is a song off of their new album, "Winter Of Mixed Drinks".
High School Top Three
Blank - The Fucking Truth
Blank and Liar's Academy and really any Ryan Shelkett band was crucial to my formative years.
Built To Spill - Car
Classic. Great classic.
Dismemberment Plan - Do The Standing Still
Couldn't find a video for D Plan's "Can We Be Mature," which is what I would have chosen for the angst, but the standing still is good too.

Sorry Duskin. I've been lazy. I'll step it up. Brightblack Morning Light is a pretty cool group. I discovered them way back in high school when I was reading Grapes of Wrath for school, and I really can't think of anything more perfect for reading that with. I'll forever associate them with that.

Just kidding. Kind of.
This song was in my head when we got on the plane from Japan to Vietnam. Not sure why, maybe I heard it in the airport during the layover.

WAIW: The Walkmen - No Christmas While I'm Talking
Sorry, I meant to post this yesterday, but was so busy getting a tan.
Here is my WAIW post, on Thursday.
Not the best sound quality, but this is how it sounded the first time I heard this song. It was actually the first time ever hearing any Walkmen music in general. Naomi and Kevin had been talking about them for a while, and on my birthday, many, many years ago (pre- Bows + Arrows) they happened to be playing a free show on the Hudson pier with the Adam Green. It was a last minute decision to go, since it was kind of raining out, but I am so glad I went b/c they put on such a great show that day even though hardly anyone showed up.
Man, can he scream. I love it...The band's existence has supplied endless amounts of amusement to me and my crazy girlfriends..road-trips included...
This is for Naomi:
This photo was taken at an American Eagle Outfitters party where The Walkmen played a short set. Ham was wasted, but he introduced us to his mother that night, which I'd say was a coup.

OMG.
I love this song. It has been in my head for a very long time, but I couldn't remember who sang it, past knowing it was some Brit named Georgie ---, and I kept spelling it wrong in all of my searches ("yeah yeah"). It was put on a mixed CD over 10 years ago, and the track names never transferred... Finally, after agonizing for over a year, I asked my sister, who got it within 2 minutes. Over iChat.
I feel like a load has been lifted- THANK YOU, CAROLINE!!!

Wreckless Eric - Reconnez Cherie
WAIW - So I heard this song for the first time when a friend made me a mix about 5 years ago and this was the first song of that mix. Needles to say the first song is always a tough one to pick for a mix, and I thought she did an excellent job "what a great choice" and I played that CD over and over for weeks.
A few years later I went to go see the movie "Stranger Than Fiction" and there's the scene where Maggie Gyllenhaal invites Will Ferrell over and he plays a Wreckless Eric song on the guitar. After the movie was over I waited around for all the credits to scroll 'til I figured out what that song was. I had never even heard of him before that mix, when I got home I did some research and bought a lot of music from STIFF records, including Wrecless Eric's album. Not really a great punk rock album, but I like this song a bunch.

WAIW - Modest Mouse - The Good Times are Killing Me
Speaking of Modest Mouse...I've actually been listening to something else on repeat all day, but there isn't much of a story behind it. This one has a bit of something...
A few years back, right before I moved to Los Angeles, (ok, it was more like 4), STRONG KENT WYTHE and I had a little company called Bryn & Lou (and Tiny Toys by Bryn & Lou), and we were being shot for a piece in Lucky Magazine. It was a tight shot, but we faked a design studio/work station in the SKW apartment, which was pretty awesome, and probably everything I would want in my own studio anyhow...
The shoot lasted about 4-6 hours I think, but I can't remember now. What I do recall really well is that the whole time, we only listened to one of SKW's mixes on repeat. Imagine how many times this song played. And it's one that you notice each time around...but it was one of those times when, the sun was really shining in on her apartment, the vibe was good, and it just felt totally right each and every time. I will forever think about that day whenever this song comes on, anywhere I am.

Hi, I’m fresh out of luck for WAIW. I’ve been scouring the internet for some kind of snippet of the band I wanted to write about to go with my Texas post. But its not going to happen today. That being said, this was my last distraction: a song and band we all know very well. I haven’t been as familiar with this particular audio-visual experience. There is so much happening in this video to love from beginning to end. The atmosphere and the special effects – trippy. I’m a fan of anything that remotely looks like it takes place inside my favorite vector-based arcade game: Tempest, which was released by Atari in October 1981 in the same month that Earth Wind & Fire released their hit single Lets Groove. Connect the dots...are you feeling that? I am. xx

The Dismemberment Plan - Memory Machine
Not the official music video. I guess since its WAIW (I bet you thought that I'd forget) I have to write something.
The Dismemberment Plan have been a long time favorite band of mine. Probably since about 8th grade. And since I lived in the DC metro area, I had the extreme pleasure of seeing them and Travis Morrison's newer band MANY times before each fizzled out and ended. One of my favorite stories involving him (though it was for his new band, not this one) was one time when I was on my way to a Modest Mouse concert in DC I ran into him and a bunch of friends and they were like screw the Modest Mouse concert come to this one! So I went and saw Travis Morrison and completely ditched my $50 dollar Modest Mouse tickets. I still haven't seen Modest Mouse to this day, and at this point, probably never will. I blame Travis Morrison for that.
And that's my tale.

The Drums - Saddest Summer + Bonus
Making up for my lack of posts during the weekend. I guess I'll only stick to these two aptly paired songs.
Brooklyn "Surf Rock." What a bunch of weird dudes. The singer is from the group Elkland, which was an electronica outfit, and then they went to this stuff. Still pretty fun.
Also, got to see Surfer Blood last night, and it was honestly one of the best shows I've ever been to. I've watched plenty of videos of them playing online where they sounded mildly disappointing. But whatever they had going for them last night, it was going strong, and they sounded fucking amazing. I had to pay twice face value for the tickets, but whatever, it was definitely worth it.
They played a version of this song with a like 5 minute solo section where the guitarist soloed with a drumstick. As lame as that sounds, it wasn't. It was great. It's also my favorite song from the album, and it also probably has been posted here already, but whatever.
*Replaced old video with a great live version.
